Volunteer Opportunities

The Archaeological Research Laboratory is committed to educating and working with the public.

Have you ever wondered what an archaeologist does after the digging is over? The real work begins after the excavation...in the laboratory.

We have many opportunities for volunteers to work in our various labs, alongside our archaeologists and lab technicians:

  • Washing prehistoric and historic artifacts
  • Sorting materials
  • Bagging and labeling materials
  • Other work as it becomes available

We may also offer tours of our labs to interested parties (small school groups, etc.) on a reservation basis. These tours would include:

  • Processing labs for various artifact sets
  • Flotation lab
  • Prehistoric ceramic analysis lab
  • Our collection facilities

If you are an interested individual, group, or teacher, please feel free to contact Dr. Elizabeth Kellar DeCorse at either (865) 974-0220 or ekellard@utk.edu.
